How To Print Your Own Flock
- Use a water resistant emulsion when preparing the screen. Expose the screen with the image inverted as with any transfer.
- Set your printer with even "off-contact" between the screen and the Flock paper.
NOTE:"Off-Contact" is described as the screen in down positions, resting about 1/16" above the substrate.
- The Flock paper should be secured to the print base with a vacuum or tack adhesive.
- Print the adhesive onto the Flock paper with one stroke using light squeegee pressure, and a flood stroke between prints. This flood pass is required to keep the image area from drying and clogging between prints.
NOTE:It is important to keep light pressure on the squeegee to ensure the adhesive is not pushed to far into the Flock. If the adhesive penetrates into the backing paper the image will not detach following transfer or it will give the transfer a stiff appearance.
- Remove Flock transfer paper with wet adhesive from the print station and sprinkle the powdered crystal over the wet transfer or simply pour adhesive crystals in a shallow container slightly larger than your printed sheets. Pull your printed sheet through the pool of crystals.
- Remove excess crystals (shake or tap paper). Crystals which do not stick, may be used again.
- Dry adhesive in an air dryers at 170-190°F (77-88°C). The drying time will range from 10-20 minutes, depending on the amount of adhesive deposited and the size of the transfers will still have a coarse texture and will not be glazed.
- Use a soft-bristled brush to clean off and excess crystals remaining on the Flock paper.
- To complete the fusing process, a final cure step at 300-330°F is required in order to prevent discoloring. The white Flock should be cured at 300-310°F for 2 minutes. All other colors can be cured at 320-330°F for 3 minutes.
- Transfers are now complete and may be transferred immediately or stored for future use.
