  1. What is flock?
HIX flock is finely cut synthetic fibers measuring 0.5mm in length and 1.5 deiners in width about the diameter of fine silk. HIX uses an electrostatic process to create flock paper. The fibers pass through an electromagnetic charged field, and becomes electrostatically charged, which causes each fiber to stand up as it is drawn through the field to the adhesive coated paper which is grounded. One end of the fiber embeds itself into a thin layer of wet adhesive applied to the paper. This adhesive controls the release of the flock. The flock paper is then cured in a specially designed dryer and then cut into 20" x 24" sheets.

After making the flock sheets, we then screenprint adhesive onto the sheets, making a design, letter, or number that we carry in stock. We can also make one-color custom artwork using a permanent water-base adhesive. This adhesive then bonds, to the substrate, using a heat press or iron. You will have a transfer that feels like velvet, after transferrin the flock design to your substrate.

  2. Why does my flock transfer bleed if it is colorfast?
Our flock transfers normally will not bleed. Do not use solvents, bleach, brighteners, stain removers or detergent that contains bleach. Also, dry garments on the permanent press cycle, not the 'hot' cycle, in your dryer. You may want to test at your own risk.

For screenprinters making their own transfers out of our raw flock paper, HIX has found that certain adhesives and dyes will bleed. So, be aware of which dyes you will be using for your custom transfers. For best results, use HIX adhesive, flock and crystals.

  3. What else can I put flock on?
HIX flock transfers can be applied to any substrate that can withstand heat between 325-350°F. Example: Shirts, Shorts, Purses, Pillowcases, Blankets, Curtains, Terry Cloth, Rugs, Underwear, Sleepwear, Chairs, Bags, Jerseys, School Uniforms, Draperies, Mouse pads, felt and more... You are only limited by your imagination and the heat stability of the substrate.

  4. What is the durability of flock transfers? Will flock transfers wash out? Will flock transfers last longer than screen-printing or ink transfers?
HIX uses nylon, hot-melt adhesive crystal, which then is fused/bonded (with your heat press or iron) onto your garment. This is a permanent application. Flock transfers will normally last longer than screen-printed transfers (since there is no ink to wash ou tover time) when applied properly on a suitable substrate. You can iron over and over our flock transfer. HIX flock transfers will usually outlast the garment itself. Flock is ideal for constantly washed garments such as uniforms with your name and logo on it.

  6. What are the advantages or benefits of flock?
Flock is excellent alternative to embroidery and provides an upscale, three-dimensional look and feel compared to that of screen-printed or ink transfers. Now you can decorate more expensive garments at a premium price! You are only limited by your imagination!
  7.

  8. Can HIX flock be die cut with a plotter?
No. HIX flock paper CAN NOT be die cut with a plotter because our paper has a "releasable" adhesive additive.
  9.

  10. Does flock have any limitations?
Yes, flock does have limitations like any other transfer. You should not apply flock to any material that is heat sensitive, such as nylon, plastics and vinyl. Always pre-test flock for adhesion and washability before beginning any flock application.
  11.

  12. When considering flock for your client, what questions should you ask?
    - Is the design a one-color transfer?
    - What quantities are needed?
    - Do they have email art or hand-drawn art?
    - Is the art flock printable?
    - What is the turn around time?

HIX provides one-color flock transfers with 25 colors to choose from.
  13.

  14. How does the cost of flock compare to other types of apparel decoration?
There are many different types of apparel decorations. Flock is a unique 3-D upscale look. It is inexpensive, durable, fast and looks great on almost anything. Flock is the way to go for your apparel needs!
  15.

  16. Can flock be used in multi-media combinations?
This is one of the main advantages to using Flock. As you have noticed, the utilization of several screen-print techniques is very popular right now, as it gives a garment more dimension. The problem with most screen-printing methods is that they can only be pressed once. However, this is not the case with Flock as it can be pressed multiple times without having a negative effect. Simply press the Flock transfer first and then press whatever else you wish to combine (rhinestones, glitter, plastisol, foil, ect).
  17.

  18. What are the washing instructions for flock?
If the transfer has been pressed correctly (with the right amount of heat, pressure and time) than it will not come off in the washer or dryer. Avoid bleach and machine wash in cold water.
