Art Services
The Art Department in the Flock division of HIX boasts a highly trained
art staff that uses cutting edge graphic technology to create logos
and designs for the transfer industry.
HIX art services are highly flexible and designed to meet the customers
needs. HIX
artists
can create your design/logo from scratch with a concept or a rough sketch.
A variety of type graphics can be accessed from the HIX archive or acquired
from outside sources to match any concept or look. HIX however, will
not purchase fonts for customers who wish to create a desired style. We may suggest
a similar replacement or refer the customer to an alternative source
for free or purchased fonts.
Art services are covered in the new order fee which may
include redrawing or reimaging faxed or mail in art. Art processes
may also involved scanning and editing art in our computer system. Finished
art is ganged and presented to customers in its finished state (email
or faxed) with all pertinent information about color and quantity. Orders
will be taken to production only after signed fax or emailed approval
has been received.
Submitted Artwork
HIX will accept artwork that is sent by fax, mail or electronic means
such, DVDs, CD’s or files sent through the internet (see electronic
files). Incoming art will have to be assessed on a case by case basis
to determine it’s viability as a flock print. Flock transfers
consist of printed adhesive that holds fibers, that same adhesive allows
the transfer to attach to most textile substrates when it is heated
again. Using bold type and graphics are the best approach in ensuring
the success of your flock transfers.
Flock Ready Art will consist of the following:
- Art must fit into a 9’ x 11” (small format) or 19”
x 23” (large format) work space
- Line graphics must exceed 2 pts. in thickness to print properly
- Type graphics must be at least 14 pt. bold for any sans serif type
(Block)
- Type graphics must be at least 18 pt. bold for any serif type (Roman)
- Reversed out lines where the substrate or background becomes a design
element must measure at least 2.5 pts. wide to prevent these areas
from filling in.
- Any dots... ie. above the I’s and periods must be enlarged
in some cases up to 3 times to ensure their printability.
- Ganged designs should allow for at least 1/2” space between
designs to allow for cutting.
- Halftone art is unacceptable for the generation of any graphics
for flock.
Electronic files
Having files sent over the internet by electronic means is becoming
the stardard way of transferring art images from one source to another.
The speed and efficiency of this method has revolutionized the industry
and the adoption of new standards and technology has continued to make
file sharing more popular. Electronic files however can be a source
for viruses and can present compatability problems. Listed below are
the standards HIX has adopted for the submission of electronic art by
means of the internet.
Vector (line) art files
Vector or line graphic art is the standard for use in the screen print
industry. These type images are usually created in drawing or art programs
such as Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw or Macromedia Freehand. These
files are ideally suited for screen graphics because they are resolution
independent, scalable and are easy to edit. HIX currently supports Illustrator
CS2 and lower and Corel Draw 10. These programs also have the capability
of converting type to outlines or paths, this is highly recommended because
it allows HIX to edit this art if necessary.
PDF Files
PDF’s (Portable Document Files) Are becoming very popular as
they allow the receiver of the file to view the same art as that sent
by the originator, this includes fonts as well that may not be resident
on the receivers computer. The sender must have adobe distiller to create
these files. HIX has Adobe acrobat which is the standard software required
to interpret these files. This fact should be communicated to HIX before
sending such files.
JPEG Files
JPEG are the standard file format for sending photo over the web but
is not an acceptable standard for art that is used to develop screen
stencils. These files though acceptable to show size, style and graphic
are a type of bit map file that is usually fuzzy around the edges. These
images can be worked with but may require additional art or typesetting
to render them useful for our processes. Art charges will accrue at
the standard rate to make JPEG art “flock ready”.
Third Party Art
Some of the Art that customers send in is generated from third party
art sources. Art received from these sources must conform to the same
standards as those listed above. To save time and trouble these standards
should be adopted by third party suppliers before any art is
commissioned, special attention should be paid to line thickness and format
sizes.
Clip Art
Clip Art files come in various forms, some designs are vector based
some are bitmap based. On occasion Hix will receive email files that
contain embedded pieces of bitmap and vector (line) art in the same document.
The inconsistent nature of these type files lend themselves to viruses
and incompatability. Any embedded Bitmaps will have to be re-imaged as
vector art and must conform to HIX graphic standards.
HIX Corporation will not knowingly accept licensed or trademarked
graphics without proof of authorized use. Hix reserves the right to
refuse any artwork for print which HIX deems offensive in content or
imagery.
